1/4 pipe thread is around .530 in diameter, depending on how far along the thread you measure - not that much bigger than 1/2 inch. What looks like a half inch bolt with 18 tpi could be the pipe thread.
There is also such a thing as nps - a pipe thread that is not tapered.
