That is not true. We changed the water pump of a member's (Fairfield County A's) 31 Coupe Monday (pictures). He had a 4 blade fan. This worked fine for us:

-drain coolant
-remove hood
-detach radiator support rods
-detach upper radiator hose
-loosen radiator hold down nuts/bolts
-remove light bar bolts so it can be moved forward (We found that tilting the radiator forward to the light bar did not give enough clearance. With the bar moved forward we could tilt the radiator enough to get the water pump out.
-move the fan to the new pump
-reverse the procedure to reassemble everything

The hardest part was getting the cotter pins back in the radiator hold down nuts. There is not much room to work down there, but we did eventually do it.

Oh, and yes we used cardboard to protect the radiator.
