C and G and other vendors sell a bearing retrofit kit consisting of a bearing, tapered sleeve and a spring. It is copied after a system that Ford began using in the 50's. I've used them many times and they work good. I think the kit is about $25. As for wheelbarrow bearings, those I have seen have a flange on them that will not allow the bearing to slip down into the column. They will not allow the steering wheel to fit properly
