Yep, on Europe, and that was over quick--took one month to defeat Poland in 1939 and two months to defeat France in 1940. After that, no one fought on the Western European mainland until 1944.
The war was way over there in 1939, so I would think that these young Americans kept their "young and fancy free" attitudes until the attack on Pearl Harbor; Americans were pretty much isolationist up until Dec 7, 1941. Before that, Americans wanted nothing to do with the war.
