What style of ends are on the retainers? Square? Enlarged w/a small hole? Tapered?
IIRC the originals had tapered ends w/the ends visible so it is easier to get a pointy pry tool behind the ring.

Tapered, with no hole. By the time I get a screwdriver under the tapered end, the pressure required to do that causes the retainer to skate around the groove. I didn’t see a way to hold the retainer still—needle nose pliers didn’t help at all.
