The springs in the pressure plate should knock the pedal back fairly strongly There is a light weight spring in the bell housing that pulls the pedal back the last little bit so that the throw out bearing will be clear of the pressure plate.
I'd lube the shaft as fullrace suggests. I'd also remove the inspection plate on the bellhousing and lube the throw out bearing and try to get a little grease on the pilot shaft where the TO bearing runs. I'd then stab the clutch several times hard and let the pedal come up quickly (with the car not running).
