I think all of the sediment just settled down to the bottom of the hose into the water pump. I wouldn't be surprised if the hose was clogged up an inch or two.
If the hose is clogged at the bottom, into the water pump, any heat that made it's way into the heater core, would be be dispersed quickly and therefor the hose coming out of the heater would never get warm.
It will be interesting to see what he finds out.
