Correct. The only times I've used it in the crankcase is the first couple oil changes after I bought a high mileage used car. I figure it's good practice in case the previous owner didn't keep up on oil changes.
I changed a valve cover gasket on my Jeep at 215,000 and the top end looked new, no sludge, not even any varnish. Was it the seafoam? Maybe, maybe not but it sure didn't hurt anything.
