Unless the band material is worn, needing replacing, start by adjusting the low band. With full pressure on the pedal, you should be about 1 to 1-1/2 inches above the floor. Are you using the parking brake handle to hold in neutral while doing this? If you are, how far back are you pulling the handle? You could be pulling it too far back and applying the parking brakes.

There are just bushing in the transmission, no bearings. Not enough information to guess if bushing are good or bad.
