Check the seal on the gas cap.
If you find a minor weap around the steering column mount on the gas tank, will the magic gas tank sealer work? I know the best solution is to remove and fix properly.

As others have said, the gas gauge glass seal loves to leak. Sometimes it is hard to detect. CLean the instrument panel thoroughly and close up the car. Better if it is in a garage with still air. The next day enter the garage and follow your nose. Sometimes a white paper towel rubbed on the gas gauge glass will show pink even tho you can see the wet gas.

I use Momma for specially hard gas smells. She still has a sharp nose for bad oders.
My nose has been ruined by too much av gas and aroma monents.
