Many spring shackles use Philidas nuts. A Philidas nut is a locknut with one or more thin slots cut into a reduced-diameter circular top. That area is pinched tight, making an all metal lock nut. Here's one:
There are several other styles of interference nuts as well. Some type was originally supplied with that set if there are no cotter holes.
