Default 33 steering box and lube

Our 33 had got a little more play in the steering than I liked , so after a good look at it found the sector shaft bushes had play in them allowing the sector shaft to move around.
so thinking it would be an easy job, got stuck into it,removed the sector shaft housing from the box without taking the whole box out,the shaft was about .002 tapered and bushes worn ,so I looked at the housing and decided to use another one from my spares, and fitted new bushes( nos ford ) and honed them to fit the fixed shaft,at the same time I fixed a leak or two on the steering box ,these were the bottom via the light switch and a bad seal on the sector shaft.
after reassembling it and adjusting the box ,I looked at my service sheets and it said it should be filled with heavy gear oil,so I filled it with 85/140 gear oil.
I took it for a drive and it was a dog of a thing, hard to steer and squarked on turning.
I then had a think, drained all the gear oil out, filled it with JD corn head grease, took it out this arvo for a long drive, its like a different car.drives nice.
Lesson learned no gear oil in the box .
