Here's the thing..... that damage is in the center of the worm...... in other words when you're supposed to be "tight on center" it's going to be rough
on center when adjusted correctly. The worm should be changed out.
That type of damage is usually because water got in the box.
Just curious- could you feel that roughness in the steering wheel?

Here's I nice one for you..... I couldn't feel this but the box wasn't properly adjusted either.
