This reminds me of an incident a little over twenty years ago with my 53 F-100. Fresh rebuild on the 8RT engine and NOS Genuine Ford thermostats in the box but tested before installing. Brand new Edelbrock aluminum heads. As you said I had the original temp gauge and senders and an auxilairy mechanical one, temperature shot up after only a short trip, thermostat failed shut or failed to open, warped the left side head, bought new ones to not have an issue with a used warped head. Had issues from then on,overheating, head gaskets etc. This is why I am paranoid about running thermostats in my 59AB that I only drive in the summer anyway. I also will never run aluminum heads again, should have left that part stock.
