That's exactly how this works. It's a vintage K R Wilson tool, specifically designed for Ford passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

I've used another I have NUMEROUS times and do not recall having an issue with any removals.
Prior to having this tool, I do recall some swearing going on, sore hands and wrists...
