Chunks From Steering Wheel

Couple of chunks fell off the steering wheel where the steering wheel and column meet. Fun driving home !
Looking at the wheel, it seems that the steering wheel is metal and has "bakelite" moulded around it. Am I correct that the strength/function of the wheel is O.K. for now with some chunks missing from the part near the column ?
