The bushings that surround the clutch release shaft, the shaft itself, the shaft and bushings at the pedal bracket, the rod (as you'd depicted) and the pin. All of these wear points add up exponentially and as such make shifting difficult if not impossible at times.

I really, really did not expect that removing the play at that "rod" end would contribute to that significant of an improvement....
