When I wood grained my '47 convertible I laid on the lighter background first, which is opposite of most instructions. Then, using an old brush with the end trimmed into an irregular form, I stroked on a darker color to produce the grain. When the appearance was finished, I applied a clear coat to protect the piece. Be sure the base coat is completely dried before tackling the grain, as i is likely you will have to wipe it off several times before you get the hang of it. Mine came out so well, some have asked me if it is actually wood.
