This was a War situation & was to cut noticeable glare that the enemy may pick up & act on. Commonly seen on vehicles all over Europe during the W.War2.
Some of these War era AA Gaz were produced without full front fenders, sort of like Jeep fenders & even with canvas door coverings. That was to get as many out quickly into the front. Gaz are still remembered well for their part in the Great Patriotic War [ WW2] in Russia.
