Your just going to try and see how much room you have. With the engine in the car it's hard to put the engine pan up in place because it wants to drag on the head of the bolts holding the plate. Its also kind of tricky to get the bolts started with the pan up in place.
With the engine out of the car it doesn't matter what order you put them together and it's much simpler to do.
