We cold jury rig it up to work but just don't understand why this is happening.

Longest Snyder's shows is 45-31/32" and this for the 1930-31 Gemmer setup. Keep in mind the measure is made from the "underside" ring of the switch handle (the part that touches the nut/steering column) to the end of the nub contact at the lower end.
