If you run the starter with the key OFF you can usually tell if you have good compression on all 4 cylinders, because the engine slows slightly for each compression. If the starter seems to go fast during part of the cranking, then it most likely is speeding up due to low compression on one or two cylinders.

This is the quick easy check, but it's best to use a compression tester to know for sure what the pressure is. From your last posting, it does sound like it could be crossfire in the distributor body, as I've seen that happen a couple times.
