Al,
I would NOT remove the cross shaft. If you take off the U-joint by using a 9/16 on an extension you can remove the U-joint and as jackson said have ample clearance.

I like using some alignment pilots ( bell housing bolt size with heads cut off and tapered) to help in aligning it back so you don't torque the clutch disc and it's overall easier. I think about 2 1/2 to 3 inches I believe is good on the alignment bolts. Screw one in on each side.
