Well, i thought it through. Turned it upside down, stuck it on a shelf way in the back of the garage. Every time i think of it, i go back there and peer into the end of the box with a flashlight. Well, i can see it coming down like stalactites and starting to form up again! The counterweights are about there, the journals are still a little funky.
I just hope i live long enough to see a crank in there, and i sure hope i don't wait too long and see a blob on the other side of the box!
