I agree, oil won't interfere with current flow. I would look for a weak or jammed spring holding the rotary contact plate against the wiring connector. Bathe it in solvent or shoot it with WD-40 to clear the gunk and check for free travel. It should press against the connector with pretty good force. If it feels mushy you need to replace the connector housing.
