I drove mine all last summer with the windshield down. When it is down it never hit the gas cap, it stopped about an inch above the cap, but I did put a towel under it anyway. My windshield was cracked so it didn't matter. I had all original parts. It was fun with it down made it seem like you were going a lot faster than you were.
