hoffernsp: Here's a few photos of my 51 Merc brakes that may help. Removing and installing new shoes is usually an easy job if you have the correct tools. Are you sure you have the correct kit? Photos below are of 51 Merc. If you need a complete extra spare pair of front 51 Merc "loaded" backing plates complete with all the brake parts and shoes, drums and bearing and grease caps let me know.
