It sure sounds like the shift forks aren't properly engaged in the gears, and two gears are in mesh at the same time. If you can shift to neutral and all is fine, then I'd shift to first gear and see if you can hand crank it. If two gears are engaged at the same time you won't be able to hand crank it more than a quarter turn or less.
If you don't have a hand crank and want to roll it, then do as Mitch said and shift to third gear.
