That is correct for later self energising brakes which may have been the norm when that was said to you.
On early ford brakes (39-48) the long shoe goes to the front. Coincidentally the larger end of the wheel cylinders goes to the front. In my mind I remember "big big". Big shoe and big end of cylinder to the front.
