Removal of the radiator first will save you some labor later, and will give added assurance of not making a mistake. You not only have the gear to line up, but the cover has the rope seal on top, so you need to allign it correctly. Not a big deal, but visibility is critical to do it right.

Once the cover is off, wrench the engine over till the timing marks align before removing the old gear. This will help in aligning the new gear.
