I have to wonder...was the engineer aware of the history or did he come up with this excellent idea on his own in a historical vacuum?

And...note that the degree of taper at the tip has been enhanced a little over stock Model A-B, almost exactly like Marco's suggestion on helping the pin find the inadequate hole in most repro timining gears...
