If you install new cork gaskets and don't get them wet with gas in a couple of months they can disintegrate.I mostly find the quality of the cork is the biggest problem. Also, people will buy a gasket set and let it set around for a year or two before installing.I have two cars that have had the guages swimming around in alcohol for over 30 years.Probably longer,I did the guages in the early 80's,and a local station has been selling gas with alcohol in it since about 1980.It was marketed as gasohol in the early years,or at least until everybody else had to sell it.Then the name was dropped.
