The gear should only go on one way.

There is only on way to check.
Put keyway at 12 0clock. then line up pointer coat hanger at TDC on pulley.
Looking at the intake valve #1 turn engine till you see the intake just start to open.
Turn in one direction.
Now look at pulley. It should about 3 degs BTDC
If this is true button it up.
