I'm not sure what all type of inserts are available, but I have installed several sets of them on 4.6 Fords. The ones I used were not adapters, they come as a kit where you drill out the existing threads, tap new threads and then install the inserts. They are a life saver on the 4.6s! Looks like you can get the inserts in various lengths with just the taps.
