I run a completely stock original model A generator on 12 volts with good service . I run a Fun Projects can style 12 volt voltage regulator that takes the place of the cut out . Fun Projects also offers a 6 volt and 8 volt version of the can style voltage regulator . If high amps for lots off accessories is required , an alternator would be a better choice .
