Fritz.......I just had the same problem with a leak, but I got another canister. Oil came out of the top just like that. You have a rubber washer as you noted. Take that off and get yourself a copper washer and use it. Make sure you have a good seal inside the lid and screw the hold down bolt tight with copper washer. I bet you solve your problem.
