It has been in operation since 1977, originally featuring a horse named Rex, later replaced by a gelding named Lightning. The manager states, "There is no rider, no prods, no electrical jolts, and no trap doors."[6] The horse jumps twice daily during a two-month season and has the rest of the year off.[7]

Latest report from Lake George (Summer 2019) is that "Lightning" after about a 20 year career as a "jumping horse" decided he had had enough - and refused to jump. No one knows what changed Lightning's mind, but as of our trip Lightning was relegated to the "petting zoo" where he appreciates better his fans and their hands on thanks.
