Basiclly:

Cut the shaft about 6" from the box.

On reassembly: taper both ends of the shaft to get a strong weld.
Insert a rod, about 10" long, inside the shaft to insure straightness and strength.
Grind off excess weld.
Drill holes in a 10" sleeve that slides over the shaft. Spot weld the holes.
