If that starter mounting bolt had been a tad longer, the engine might have been difficult to turn over, as it would have been pushing harder against the flywheel. Such a situation has fooled a great many Model A guys over the years into thinking the engine was stuck. I believe your squeal would have gone away in short order because the turning flywheel would have worn down the end of the softer metal bolt shank. As you press in the clutch, the crankshaft moves forward a little bit and that would have also contributed to ending the sound by spinning with more force against the bolt end. 'Sure would have been unnerving until the bolt wore down, though!
