You might find that re-thread kit available on loan from Autozone, O'Reilly, etc. That way you just buy the inserts.
Something to keep in mind is the need for heat transfer. Heli-Coils are a loose fit and I don't think transfer heat good enough. If a spark plug can't transfer heat to the head as intended, it will overheat and cause pre-ignition.
Inserts like pictured are far better. I agree with your plan! No need to have a plug or two blow out miles from home! And those heads are not going to know the difference between a 14MM plug and an 18MM.
