I use the new stainless shaft . I also use the modern front bearing and sleeve from Brattons . The modern front bearing and sleeve has less tolerance than the original style replacement front bearing and can withstand the load longer and better . The sleeve can be driven in place on the shaft with a deep socket if you don't have a press. Nothing lasts forever but this gives a mostly leak proof setup for years at a lower price than the so called leak proof pumps that are offered . When the pump needs greasing , I back the packing nut off the threads and grease the it . If and when the pump begins to drip the packing nut can be backed off and packing can be added just like an original setup .
