Default Re: Rear end or transmission?

A normal Model A has the ring gear on the left side of the pinion gear. The pinion gear is in the center of the car. You can take the left axle housing off and pull out the entire ring gear assembly including both axles from the car.

A Model A that has three gears in reverse has the ring gear on the right side of the pinion. You would have to remove the right axle housing to remove the assembly. Whoever put the rear end together did not know which side the ring gear was supposed to be on and put it together wrong.

If it were mine I would pull the rear end and tear it down and start all over. Chances are that the person also did not know about pre-load and back lash, and also could have done things like replacing the bearings and not the races or seals.
