I had the same issue when rebuilding my 37 tranny. I honed those bushings with an old brake cylinder hone. Leave the bushings in the trans. Hone them very slowly and gently, until the shaft goes in by hand. Put a little grease on the shaft, install it, and then squirt some grease in the two zerk fittings while the trans is still out.
