Note that the bottom of the seat base is routed around the perimeter to accommodate the thickness of the seat cover and tacks. The hinges are also inset into the bottom so they are flush with the bottom. See the picture in #5 above.
The attached picture taken whole fitting things up shows how the springs fit the bottom.
