There are also various products sold as "barrier creams", either for working with water based material or petroleum based material. I cannot remember the trade names for them but recall one sold as "Workman's Friend". Basically, one spreads the stuff on the hands, works it in well, then let's it dry a bit. As per the descriptor, these products create a barrier that prevents the grease and grit from getting into the skin and nails. Later, it all comes off easily with hand soap and water.
