You are in luck! You most likely have a '36 dash gauge (which is electric). The original '35 fuel indicator is similar to your temperature gauge in appearance. Many (myself included), regard the '35 fuel unit as being worthless as a fuel indicator. The '36 unit solves that problem.
As for your indicator problem, you have basically only two parts to be concerned about. Namely, the dash gauge and the tank sender. To check the dash gauge remove the sender wire and briefly ground it. The dash gauge should rapidly move toward full. Release it quickly before it reaches full. As for the sender, remove it and ground the case and work the arm up and down to see how the dash gauge reacts. If the sender works erratically it can be replaced with any '36-'55 Ford sender.
If each unit behaves normally, you most likely have a bare spot in the connecting wire which is intermittently grounding with engine vibrations or a simple loose connection between the two elements.
