NOT too close to a bench seat if you use an S-10-type tailshaft HOUSING, or a Jeep 4X4 tailshaft housing like in the picture below. These tailsgaft housings move the shifter much farther forward, to a location only about 7" behind the Henry Ford 3-speed shifter location. The picture below is a Camaro T5 with Jeep 4X4 tailshsft housing and tailshaft which we made-up to achieve the shortest T5 that can be assembled. It's shown here behind an 8BA flathead in a '35 Ford pick-up truck. Note the distance FORWARD of the bench seat riser. And yes, that's a torque tube bolted to the back of the T5.
