Actually, in Texas, unless you title and register it as an antique, with "limited" driving privileges, the required inspection regimen always includes a visual match between the VIN on the frame (or engine) and what's indicated on the old title. Wherever you live, unless you are going to be buried with the car, I would recommend resolving it in a manner that won't raise a red flag up to the next potential owner. Its only a matter of when- not if - you are going to sell it, and the extra time and effort spent will pay dividends when that time comes. Before I bought my '29, I ran away from more than a few cars where the engine number was either obviously altered, or re-stamped haphazardly. My .01 cents worth....
