You can't be sure it has no cracks unless it come apart and someone magafluxs it. If your patient it can be parted out. Rebuild of a '40 - '48 side shift transmission is $400+, and plenty of folks are driving stock three-on-the-tree. A good used one should be worth maybe half that. First pull the bottom drain plug and check what drains out for metal chips. Stick your finger in the hole and feel around. If it passes that test, pull the side cover off and check the gears for wear and chips. If it shows signs of excessive wear or chipped teeth, the <$100 figure applies for the remaining good case and shafts.
