No modification needed. If an electric pump applies pressure to the inlet side of the mechanical pump, both inlet and outlet valves will open and allow free flow through the pump. Doesn't matter if the engine is running and mechanical pump pumping, or not.

I only turn on my electric pump for priming after sitting a long time, or for vapor lock. Works fine as long as the electric pump is a type that allows flow through when not powered and running. That way the mechanical pump can pull fuel through it when the electric pump is off.
